Once a noisy printworks, Courtyard by Marriott in Berlin’s Mitte neighbourhood welcomes guests from all over the world today. Located at the heart of what was once the world’s biggest newspaper district and close to the historic Mossehaus, the hotel is located at the crossroads of Germany’s tumultuous history. The area has now become a lively mix of business, residential and cultural spaces. And Courtyard by Marriott acts as a premier destination for business and international tourists. Thanks to EVOline’s power solutions, the open-plan lobby is an urban lounge for guests.

In terms of urban planning, the Courtyard by Marriott in Berlin’s Mitte neighbourhood incorporates the area’s historical architecture as a perimeter block building. The project was completed in the early 2000s. Alongside the hotel, it also includes residential and commercial spaces. The building’s design is split into two parts with a horizontal body resting on columns and a recessed glass base. The proportions are inspired by the neighbouring, heritage-protected Krausenhöfe – apart from the Mossehaus, the only surviving buildings from Berlin’s historical newspaper district. As a result, the project blends in perfectly with its backdrop. The hotel’s lobby behind the base’s transparent facade is the centrepiece and recently underwent a thorough refurbishment by Living Design from Sweden.
A multipurpose design approach
The Courtyard interior has undergone in-depth modernisation to meet the needs of today’s travellers. The Berlin hotel is the Courtyard by Marriott brand’s first European project to implement the new Courtyard design concept. The design strategy’s goal is to create timeless and practical environments, complemented by the features that today’s travellers want. To do so, power supply solutions were part of the design concept from the outset and not afterthoughts. The open-plan lobby concept is all about multipurpose zones that combine the reception, bar, restaurant, lounge and workspaces to form one seamless whole. Spacious lounge sofas, flexible seating groups and co-working areas lend the space structure and create one crisp design language. Warm materials, fabric surfaces and an understated colour palette engender an atmosphere that is both chilled and professional. This is where guests wait for appointments, hold informal meetings or work on their laptops.
The demands on the infrastructure grow with the increasing complexity of usage requirements. For today’s travellers, mobile devices are indispensable. They want to recharge their smartphones, tablets and laptops easily at any time. Which is why discreet integration of charging ports plays a major role. To preserve the design concept’s clarity, the power supply is designed to be both functional and unobtrusive. Flush-mounting the EVOline One into the seating and BackFlip into the work tables allows subtle fitting of the power solutions to the furniture and becomes a part of the design concept.

Power where guests need it
The EVOline One’s power sockets and USB charging ports are built into the fixed lounge sofas’ bases. The ports are incorporated into the seating and easy to reach for guests charging their devices in the lobby. Devices don’t need extra adaptors because the furniture comes with traditional sockets and USB charging ports. The system’s compact size is a huge benefit. The EVOline One can be flush-mounted with furniture surfaces and requires minimal mounting depth. As a result, the power supply solution is simple to add to the customised sofas without affecting their design or upholstery. The ports are also intuitive for guests to access.
Co-working powered by the right connections
In the lobby’s co-working areas, the EVOline BackFlip on the tables in the middle are a reliable power supply at the touch of a button. When not in use, the system retracts so that it’s flush with the table top and conceals the connections. A gentle press rotates the unit by 180 degrees to expose the power socket and the high-performance USB charger. This intuitive option spares guests the hassle of looking for power outlets underneath furniture and ensures an ergonomic workspace minus tangled cables. When pressed down, the BackFlip keeps the sockets clean and protected. This functional feature maximises guest convenience and extends the hotel infrastructure’s life span.

Therefore, the lobby in the Courtyard by Marriott Berlin is a typical example of how to marry modern interior design with digital requirements. The power supply solutions were part of the design concept from the outset and not added afterwards. EVOline solutions ensure that power is precisely where it’s needed in a practical and reliable way and blend in with the interior design.
